Oceans cover 70% of the Earth’s surface, but Freshwater is only 2.5% of Earth’s total water supply. So if you start to do the math, there’s not going to be enough to go around as the world’s population is expected to grow to an estimated 9.8 billion people by 2050.
Now there’s a new wave-powered desalination machine that can filter 49,000 liters of water daily (that’s 12,944 gallons for us here in the U.S.).
According to an article by the U.S. Energy Information Administration “Ocean waves contain tremendous energy. The theoretical annual energy potential of waves off the coasts of the United States is estimated to be as much as 2.64 trillion kilowatt hours, or the equivalent of about 64% of total U.S. utility-scale electricity generation in 2021.”
